sam-hainesIn 1973 Sam wrote his MBA Thesis (Babson College, Wellesley Ma) titled “Gear Motions; a concept to leverage and acquire small distressed gear companies in the Northeast”. He joined his father Sam T later that year in the midst of the country’s “Oil Recession” for a temporary assignment to make the newly formed Gear Motions’ first acquisition (Oliver Gear in Buffalo NY). In 1978 Sam accepted a third “Temporary” assignment and the then defunct Nixon Gear in Syracuse was purchased from Lincoln Bank adding precision ground gearing to the growing Gear Motions Companies. In 1985 Sam’s father retired and Sam (now living in Syracuse temporarily) became President of Gear Motions. A “Start Up” Plastic Gear Design Division was developed in the early 80’s and an Aerospace and Defense Division acquired in California in 1988. Sam and Deb, (married permanently since 1970) live in Syracuse, where they raised their four children.

Sam has been active in his community and his industry. He has served the American Gear Manufacturers Association in various Committee’s and Chairs, Board Member, as Chairman of the Board, as well as AGMA Foundation Chairman until 2005. He received numerous AGMA Awards and in 1989 received the Associations highest Award, The  E. P. Connell Award.

Beginning in 1980, Sam has served the Manufacturers Association of Central NY in various Committees, as a Board Member, and as Chairman of the Board until 1997, and in 2006 was named to MACNY’s “Manufactures Wall of Fame”.

In 2000 Sam was appointed by Governor George Pataki to the State’s Workforce Investment Board of Directors which he continues to serve today.

Sam has served on the Board of the Gear Research Institute since 2002 and will become Chairman of the Board in 2008, succeeding Gary Kimmet of the Gleason Works.
