GearyMr. Geary Smith from Caterpillar has been appointed to the GRI Board of Trustees and has been elected to serve as Secretary of the Board.  Geary holds a Board seat that is appointed by the AGMA.

Geary received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, in Golden Colorado in 1997. He received a commission in the United States Army upon graduation and served as a maintenance manager conducting direct support level work for a heavy combat brigade. In 2001, Geary left active military duty and was employed by Caterpillar Inc.

While at Caterpillar, Geary spent the majority of 6 years designing cylinder heads, cylinder blocks and core engine components for Caterpillar’s midrange engine series to meet various European and EPA emissions tier levels on industrial, machine, marine, and on-highway truck programs.

In 2007, Geary received his Master’s degree in Engineering Management and also joined the newly acquired Progress Rail division of Caterpillar. At Progress Rail, he has been the lead engineer for the PR30C design which successfully implemented an SCR system in a freight locomotive. In 2009 Geary became the engineering supervisor responsible for the mechanical design. During this time his team was responsible for the design of the PR43C, a dual engine locomotive and the PR22L, an export locomotive to Australia.

In 2014 Geary started his career in Gear design by becoming the supervisor for parallel axis gear design at Caterpillar. This team is responsible for all drivetrain gear design for Caterpillar which includes transmissions, pump drives, and drive axles. In addition, Geary has participated in a task force led by Jan Alfieri with the AGMA in order to document training available to the gear industry that is outside of what AGMA offers.

The seat was previously held by Mr. Bryan Lammers, also from Caterpillar. Bryan retired from CAT at the end of 2015.
