Job Description Summary

As a Research Engineer in the Mechanics and Design Organization, you will work with the engineering team in the design, analysis, testing, and validation of rotating machinery components for electrical and turbomachinery systems. Applications include fossil and renewable power generation and storage, gas compression and gas/liquid pumping, electric machines and drives, and propulsion systems for land and air transport among others.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Execute rotating machinery design projects in the power generation, propulsion and/or oil and gas sectors.
  • Work in the design, analysis, and testing of rotating machinery components and systems including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation, and product implementation.
  • Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables.
  • Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews.
  • Provide expertise to help resolve technical challenges across the organization.
  • Collaborate in the development of internal and external project proposals and initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction across the group to grow overall technical capability and product knowledge in technical focus areas.
  • Provide technical development across the organization through effective coaching/mentoring.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT(S):

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or MS with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design Experience in rotating machine design projects in the power generation, propulsion and/or oil and gas sectors.
  • Experience with the design, analysis (including finite element analysis) and testing of rotating machinery components (e.g., shafts, bearings, dampers, couplings, seals, gears, etc.) including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation, and product implementation.
  • Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques and material processing selections in turbomachinery and electrical machines.
  • Experience in conceptual design, build up and validation of full-scale rotating machinery incorporating new or experimental technology.
  • Experience in conceiving, developing, and carrying out experiments in rotating component hardware and transferring component level tests into full scale hardware solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Execution mindset and sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a global team environment.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the master’s level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Proficiency using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo) and finite element analysis using ANSYS.
  • Extensive testing of rotating component, data acquisition, data reduction and design validation.  Proficiency using ADRE and LMS data acquisition and reduction systems.
  • Experience in system modeling - coupling of fluid, thermal, and structural analyses.
  • Rotor support structural design experience.
